Second Quarter 2014 Outstanding Citizen Award Winners

Posted: July 15 2014

Bentonville, AR – July 15, 2014…Mayor McCaslin is pleased to announce the 2014 second quarter winners of the Outstanding Citizen Award.  The second quarter winners are: Sam Covert, Tina Lewis and Club Marketing Services, a division of ASM.

The Outstanding Citizen Award program was initiated in January 2011 to recognize the exceptional volunteer contributions of Bentonville residents.  There are three award categories: adult, youth and community group.

Sam Covert was nominated by Marisa Shofner.  Ms. Shofner wrote, “I am nominating Sam Covert because he holds all the qualities of being an outstanding citizen.  His volunteerism and loyalty to the Bentonville community is outstanding.”  Sam attends Ruth Hale Barker Middle School, and is a member of the Student Council.  Some of Sam’s traits listed by Ms. Shofner are:  honesty, compassion, respect, and a servant heart.   He is always considerate and willing to put others first.  Sam’s good deeds seem to be inherent; he is that mindful and considerate of others.  He is always willing to help…be it loading groceries and returning carts for seniors, opening doors for full hands, clearing litter, cleaning ponds, or making attempts to keep younger children out of dangerous situations.   With those same keen eyes and warm heart, he is also quite diligent in protecting animals and birds and has been known to give his allowance to animal rescue groups on many occasions. Sam is a straight-A student whose hobbies include playing guitar, football, and singing in the choir.

Tina Lewis was nominated by Rev. Mark Snodgrass, pastor of Bentonville Church of the Nazarene.   Ms. Lewis is the volunteer director of the Upward basketball and cheerleading program.  Upward is a ministry of Bentonville Church of the Nazarene that uses a first-class sports experience to teach participants and their families the important virtues of sportsmanship, integrity, courage, patience, and much more during the 8-week session.  Kids are mentored by coaches and volunteers.  Rev. Snodgrass said, “This volunteer position requires many hours, but Tina willingly puts in the time because she believes in the mission of Upward and loves seeing kids succeed in sports and life.”  Tina’s work begins early in the fall, and extends until after the awards ceremony in March.  Coordinating a league with over 450 participants and over 100 volunteers is a big job!  Tina averages at least 20-25 volunteer hours a week.  To conclude, Rev. Snodgrass wrote in his nomination, “Tina’s leadership and commitment to this effort makes this a reality and inspires others to get involved.  Bentonville is blessed to have a volunteer like Tina Lewis who gives countless hours to make Upward a reality in our community.”

Havenwood’s program staff nominated Club Marketing Services (CMS), a division of ASM, for the Mayor’s Outstanding Citizen award.  CMS opened their office in Bentonville in 1995.  Havenwood, is a transitional housing facility for single parents.  CMS has been a strong supporter of Havenwood for many years.  However, over the past two years, their staff has provided exceptional volunteer support through various opportunities.  CMS staff members serve on Havenwood’s Advisory Board and other related committees.  Specifically, CMS has managed the marketing efforts for Havenwood’s Angel Gala and their Bike Ride, both events provide much needed funds for the organization’s operational fund.  Numerous employees have dedicated their time and efforts toward promoting Havenwood and its programs, including chefs who have provided free catering services for events and have donated services for the live auctions at fundraising events.  Over the years, CMS staff has volunteered countless hours in graphic design, organized and lead committees, hosted meetings and appreciation events at their offices, and provided professional consulting in the areas of marketing and event planning.  In unison, Havenwood staff said, “Club Marketing is an exemplary business that models servant leadership from the top down, and we are grateful to be one of the many nonprofit recipients of their generosity.”

Third quarter 2014 nominations will be accepted until September 19, 2014.  To obtain a nomination form and additional information, please visit click here.
